The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
