Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
