RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages down to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
